Electronic Discovery consists of evidence (in the form of a variety of files- email, spreadsheets, word documents, etc.) stored in a computer. Metadata is coded information buried within each individual file. It can include the name, size, date, and type of the file. Metadata also consists of the structural information of a file: field names, columns, rows, length, etc. Information regarding where the file is located, how it is associated and who owns it can also be considered as metadata.
